“It would be a constant problem, at least for Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg. It was hard to tell exactly what was irking Kannberg (His guitar? The monitor sound? His bandmates?), but he spent almost all of Pavement’s 75-minute set shaking his head, yelling at the sound guy, or generally looking pissed off. Pavement blew through its first five songs with barely a word between songs, but Kannberg spoke up after “Shady Lane” to say, “All right, it’s gonna get better after this!” Bassist Mark Ibold looked surprised, and thus the dynamic for the rest of the night was set: Kannberg pissed, his bandmates ignoring him. “Conduit For Sale!” went well, but during “Starlings Of The Slipstream,” Kannberg stopped playing for a bit. With the rest of the band either unaware or ignoring Kannberg’s problems, it seemed he was constantly trying to catch up with them and never could get comfortabl”

Just some notes on the Vegas show: Malkmus basically refused to play Kennel District. He laid on his back during the whole song and played kind of random leads. Spiral was really upset about it and there was a palpable tension for the entire set. After Stop Breathin’, Spiral stormed off the stage and didn’t come back for a few minutes. Malkmus played the entire show with his mic positioned to where his back was to the band. I’d say this the end for Pavement.

“Last night we were taking the elevator down to the Pearl to see the shows. It was crowded with Matador types, which, to my surprise, are rather young. Vampire Weekend was playing on the speaker and this guy behind me of vague ethnicity started singing along to the song, but improvising lyrics like, “I’m so white / My parents paid for tuition,” etc. His buds, naturally, thought he was hilarious. An older gentleman in the corner was not amused. It turned out to be the drummer from Pavement: I recognized him on stage later that night. It reminded me of something that Nitsuh wrote about recently (I am writing this on my phone because of the high cost of wifi, so I don’t have a link to the actual post). He questioned the idea that certain bands are considered “more white” than others (ironically, the band in question was Pavement). It really is getting old to hear people muddle race with class, and especially to hear people still call Vampire Weekend “white.” Its both lazy music criticism and lazy observational comedy at this point, like making a joke about how ladies seem to dress sluttier on Halloween. (Good eye, bro!) So, can we just stop this sort of thing now? I mean, especially while attending a music festival in which the bands with the most “non-white” sounds are Cat Power and Spoon.”

Pavement Hollywood Bowl Set List.

As we were drunkenly walking down to the Metro after the show, my friend John saw that someone had the setlist and he told me to take a picture of it.

What angers me is not the fact that I was really drunk and should not have been operating an iPhone camera, but that there was supposed to a encore and because of the crappy photo, we’ll never know what those songs were.

UPDATE: the two songs were “Two States” and “AT&T according to Brooklyn Vegan.
